Cleanse your breath and energy with these 2 techniques

August 10, 2021

In this post, you’re going to discover how to integrate Saucha (purification) into your breath through 2 powerful breathing exercises.

Saucha, which means “purity”, can be easily applied to your body: through a cleansing routine and specific asanas, which help you detoxify and purify the body. But what about your breath?

Well, breath is a very important part of this cleansing process.

The breath is the bridge between our physical body and our subtle body, made through energy.Breathing exercises are great for creating clarity, space, and focus for the mind. They prepare us for meditation, and free us from anxiety and doubt.

That’s why in this newsletter, I’m going to show you 2 specific breathing exercises in which you can cultivate Saucha: both are also considered Kriyas, or ‘cleansing actions’ because they clear the airways in preparation for other pranayama techniques.

1- Mukha Bhastrika

‘Bhastrika’ means bellows breath. Why? Because the sound is very similar to a bellows!

This is a great breathing exercise for cleaning any stale energy from the lungs, helping the digestive system, and giving the whole system a little bit of an energy boost.

It cleanses the bloodstream of excess carbon dioxide, which is associated with mental fatigue, altered nerve sensations, and physical weakness. It has a very therapeutic effect if you’re holding on to something or you’re feeling stuck or tired and it’s a whole process of cleansing and clearing out the energy channels.

How to practice it:

Sit in vajrasana or sukhasana. With hands on your knees, inhale with the nose, and exhale through the mouth with a short sharp breath more times, drawing the navel back towards the spine and moving forward while you’re reaching the mat with your front head.

When you have completely emptied the lungs, close the mouth, inhale through the nose and come up slowly. Pause at the top, exhale smoothly through the nose, and release.

You can repeat it from 1 up to 3 times.

2- Kapalabhati

Gheranda Samhita describes it as Bhalabhati which is essentially Kapalbhati. The translation of the word “Kapalabhati” means “skull-shining” breath because it contributes to cleaning and polishing the head’s air ducts.

Another name for this breathing technique is ‘Breath of Fire’ because it brings up your energy level.

That’s why I suggest you this breath, especially when you feel tired.

How to practice it:

Sit in vajrasana or sukhasana.

Start with a deep inhale through the nose.

Then, exhale strong and deeply through the nose, forcing the air out through the nostrils with quick contractions.

Let the next inhalation flow automatically and concentrate on the exhalation.

Each breath should last about one second. You can start practicing this exercise 12 to 24 times, then gradually feel free to increase as you get used to it.

Feel the great fire, the force that Kapalabhati generates in you.

Cautions: If you have a weak constitution and poor lung capacity, suffer from ear or eye complaints, or have high/low blood pressure, then don’t attempt Kapalabhati.

I’m sure these 2 powerful techniques will help you to remove toxic energy and create space within yourself.

Give them a try and share your journey with our community, I’d love to read about your experience.
